GUIDE RIGHT

Guide Right is a program for the educational and occupational guidance of youth, primarily inspirational and informational in character. Its reach extends to high schools and colleges alike. In the latter, giving due attention to the needs of undergraduate Brothers.  Conceived in 1922 by Leon W. Stewart, and suggested at the twelfth Grand Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi, Guide Right became the fraternity's national service program. Jesse Jerome Peters, later to become the eighth Grand Polemarch, was chairman of the committee, during the administration of W. Ellis Stewart as Grand Polemarch.That insured adoption of the Program as the Fraternity's National Service Project.The purposes of the Guide Right Service Program are to place the training, experience, and friendly interest of successful men, at the disposal of youth needing inspiration and counsel regarding their choice of a life's career, while the community is made aware of the problems that may be encountered as these youth seek to realize lives of usefulness

 

Guide Right encompasses many of our youth oriented programs such as mentoring, college preparatory programs, and tutoring.   However, the Flagship Initiative of the Guide Right Service Program is the Kappa Leadership Development League.

 

 

KAPPA LEAGUE

The Kappa Leadership & Development League is a program designed to aid young men of high school age to grow and develop their leadership talents in every phase of human endeavor. Kappa League provides both challenging and rewarding experiences to enhance their lives. Since the fundamental purpose of Kappa Alpha Psi is ACHIEVEMENT, it is therefore the Fraternity's primary purpose to help these young men achieve worthy goals for themselves, and make constructive contributions to their community when they assume leadership roles. The basic objectives of the Kappa Leadership Development League may be summarized as follows:

 

• To help youth, especially those of high school graduating classes, in their selection of courses leading to vocations compatible with their aptitudes and personalities.

• To assist students, while they are training, to get started in the employment, and to progress successfully in they're chosen fields.

• To assist parents in the handling of their children by given them the opportunities to talk over their problems with those who know and are successful in their chosen vocations.

• To afford the less fortunate youths a respite from the drudgery of the streets, through sponsored trips to ball games, zoological garden, museums,theater, and other activities.

• To inform youth of the values of higher education, assistance available for continued pursuits, scholarship, loans, professional opportunities, and of current labor demands and the trends on the effect of these demands and trends on the labor market

KAPPA KARE

In 2006, the Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in association with Kappa Youth Development Foundation, Inc. launched Kappa Kare. This initiative was to focus on increasing health education and wellness in ways that are meaningful and impact the lives of Men-of-Color and their families. Specifically, the Kappa Kare initiative is to increase health literacy, assist the mentally and economically underserved people to access needed health care services and medications, as well as, to increase their knowledge and access to valuable medical informational resources. Kappa Kare continues to work with families and communities in two states (Maryland and Virginia) and the District of Columbia. We have used a Faith-Based/Community approach, which helps Men-of-Color by involving their families and community in Kappa Kare’s designed and implementation program.

The leading causes for Men-of-Color are:

• Heart Disease

• Cancer

• Cerebrovascular Disease (Stroke)

• Accidents

• Diabetes

• Homicide

• Pneumonia & Influenza

• Respiratory Disease (COPD)

• HIV (AIDS)

• Mental Health

KAPPA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION

Kappa Youth Development Foundation, Inc. (KYD) was chartered in Maryland in 1994 and received its Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) income tax-exempt certification in 1995. KYD operates as a separate charitable arm of the Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

 

Since 1995, KYD has provided scholarships, youth initiatives, community health and wellness programs. KYD’s operations are divided into three areas:

1. Kappa Kare® Community Health and Wellness Programs

   • Healthy living for Men of Color and their families

   • Senior Citizens and HIV awareness

   • On 08/16/2012, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended one-time testing without prior ascertainment of HCV (hepatitis -C) risk for persons born during 1945-1965 (baby boomers).

2. Provides Scholarships (available to all students), as well as, focused on reading, math and life skills. 

3. Operates a local branch of the National Kappa League of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

Diamonds in the Rough is Kappa Alpha Psi’s national campaign to promote the academic, social and service based Achievements of young men of color. It is an aggressive counter to the negative stereotypical images that have generalized and stigmatized young males for decades and provides a strong argument that throughout this country exists thousands of young men of color that are achieving in every field of human endeavor.

 

"The time has come for Kappa Alpha Psi to take a more central role in the plight of college bound African American and Latino boys. The Diamonds in the Rough initiative will expose young men across the nation to an intense college preparatory and scholarship access program.  The Diamonds inthe Rough campaign, will expose young men across the nation to an intense college preparatory and scholarship access program. Through innovation and old fashion hard work, the Diamonds in the Rough campaign will carry out its mission by leveraging participants’ talents , remediating their deficiencies and provide greater access to potential financial support in order to make obtaining a college degree a reality.

 

The Three Goals of Diamonds in the Rough:

1. To implement a rigorous college preparation program focused on increasing the post secondary opportunities for Kappa Leaguers

2. To provide greater ACT/ SAT test preparation resources to improve the testing outcomes of Kappa Leaguers

3. To provide educational scholarships for each graduating class of Kappa Leaguers and to increase the access to scholarship opportunities for Kappa Leaguers nationally.

RECLAMATION

The Reclamation Committee oversees the chapter’s efforts of reclaiming unaffiliated brothers into the Upper Marlboro/Waldorf (MD) alumni Chpater.  It hosts various reclamation-oriented initiatives, such as the J5 annual event.

 

Brothers, the members of the Chapter are excited about what our future holds. Kappa Alpha Psi needs you all.
